28 years ago I was a weekend visitor to Sylvan Lake for the very first time, I was 15. That weekend I spent the day at the waterslides, camped and just hung out by the lake. I distinctly remembers telling my friend, “I’m going to live here someday.”

Trevor and I have lived, worked and raised a family in Sylvan Lake for the last 13 years. We have loved building a business here, that provides year round entertainment for both Sylvan Lake residents and visitors.

Our business has loved sharing the story of the Loiselle family who first settled Sylvan Lake in the early 1900s. They came to this area, because of the lake and the many trees, and used their sawmill that had traveled with them, all the way from Quebec. Alex Loiselle made use of the lumber and built a homestead for his family and 10 years later he built the first hotel and thus began the tourism industry of Sylvan Lake.

Tourism is more than just a business sector; it’s an economic driver that crosses multiple industries and supports growth in a myriad of ways. This encompasses everything that attracts visitors to a destination; everything that makes a place special, distinctive and capable of giving value and interest in a place worth experiencing. The full impact of the visitor economy is felt when tourist spending ripples throughout our whole economy.

Wood Shed Axe Throwing is honoured to have won this award and it speaks volumes about the high caliber experience our coaches and staff provide to our customers. We are surrounded by employees who love Sylvan Lake (as much as we do) and they share that love with all who walk through our doors.
